Vincent’s Violent Vertigo

Favorite Mystery

I’ve always been fascinated by the inner workings of an artists mind. Vincent Van Gough has been long regarded as “that crazy artist who cut off his ear”. There has yet to be a consensus on the medical condition(s) which caused him to cut off his ear in 1888 and eventually commit suicide in 1890 at age 37, (although no one is completely sure that it was a suicide, either). Historians and medical professionals believe that Van Gough may have possibly suffered from epilepsy, bipolar disorder, sunstroke, acute intermittent porphyria, lead poisoning and/or Ménière’s disease. One of the symptoms of Ménière’s disease is vertigo. It’s commonly believed that the artist cut off his ear to relieve the the paint which the vertigo caused. Fascinating, right?!

Another mystery: This may or may not actually be a photo of Van Gough. Click on the photo to see what I mean and read more!
